That was the last night on the mobile treatment unit for a little while (or as it’s affectionately called “the booze bus”) means that all food on board has to be removed.

Want to go out for a quick run before I’m off on duty for the night, but I know if my leg injury flares up again I’m going to spend tonight wincing every step, tomorrow trying to look like it isn’t bothering me while I’m working on the back of an ambulance and Monday trying not to cry in front of patients at work.

Even more of a shame is I need to somehow keep cardio up without a gym to keep fit for the medical response team.

Damn you leg, damn you.

Just finished two massive reports, one on heavy metal ion toxicity and the other on the whole process of drug development for a disease including recommendations on compounds for further research.

After a month of almost non stop work it feels great to have those done, 2 awards evenings tomorrow night (really later on today now) and then exam season starts in a week, can’t wait until exams are over to hit the festivals, go on holiday and get some shifts in properly at the hospital.

So I had an assessment on saturday to join the medical response team. (A team specialising in removal of casualties from crowds and locations conventional ambulances cannot reach)

This is a totally cool opportunity, a bit of a double edged sword though, I’ll be working in everything from stadium gigs and festivals to riots.

The gear I’ll spend up to 14 hours at a time carrying is amazing for fitting in a vest and back pack though, everything from bag valve masks, airways and oxygen cylinders to full diagnostic kits and a defib with everything in between, I’m totally excited to have the chance to work with the team.

So I’m thinking about doing student pod casts about a science topic every week with a guest who isn’t of a scientific background and another student.

I think this could be interesting and allow the science to be discussed in a way for anyone to understand, these will probably be uploaded to youtube and another blog

Do you think this could work and are there any topics you’d like to hear about?

One thing I hate more than stupidly long essays are stupidly short essays.

How am I meant to explain slow release drug delivery systems and polymers in 300 words, There’s so much to write.

Why is it impossible to say no when people ask me if I want a new role within the university or a new job. I recently stepped down as a project leader so I had enough time to be president of our first aid soc, I then got headhunted by the SU asking me to take the position above project leader on their leadership committee. I’ve now just signed up to be our schools faculty representative.

Ankle injury

So, my ankle has swollen beautifully due to a rabbit hole my foot went into yesterday while running to aforementioned ”asthma attack, suspended”

Given that I have my MRT fitness test in 2 weeks this totally sucks

So yesterday I was providing cover for a medics football tournament, two stand out casualties.

A registrar with a broken knee… who refused treatment (immobilisation and gas and air) and insisted on hobbling off with his leg wobbling everywhere and making his own way to hospital.

and a group of med students who told me someone was having an asthma attack with no inhaler and wasn’t breathing, I arrived to find my “casualty” stood happily talking to me no wheezing during expiration or inspiration (and most importantly, breathing)… there were no words.

it was one of those days.

So I’ve been invited to join a team specialising in the treatment and safe removal of casualties in crowds and areas ambulances and their crews can’t reach.

This is so totally cool, there’s one condition… a fitness and clinical skills test… the clinical bit shouldn’t be too bad, only a bit of advanced first aid. However I can safely say university has ruined my body… this might be a challenge .

Since becoming a student I’ve noticed a massive increase in my tea intake and every time I drink a brew I feel a little more quintessentially British. Me and my friend even ended up having a long (super manly) discussion about how weak and pathetic the brews on the princess diaries looked (not sure how that started)

Dissertation

So I have my dissertation to be thinking about (and a literature review) I’m not really sure what to do them on, they need to be roughly chemistry based but I’m much more a fan of pharmacology and toxicology. Also it’d be ideal if it looks good in my med school application.

Anyone got any suggestions?
